Titanfall's new VR map is an intentionally glitchy "parkour playground"

Respawn Entertainment has revealed one of the three new maps headed to Titanfall in the upcoming Expedition DLC pack: War Games. It's set in a VR simulator, thus allowing for a range of visually striking areas that can visually glitch out as you play. Parkour fans will be in their element, since the geometry is designed around free-flowing mobility.

"When brainstorming ideas for the first Titanfall DLC map pack, the concept of a level in the training mission simulator got a lot of people excited," level designer Jason McCord explains on the official blog. "Designers imagined a level that was smooth, clean and abstract - a perfect place to design easy-to-read battle spaces and wallrun paths. Artists had images of differently themed areas mixed with digital artifacts and colorful lighting. The concept maintained throughout development was "parkour playground".

"The concept of a simulator level allowed for themed areas to act as the hardpoints while the buildings between are in the smooth, featureless style of the training mission rooms. The IMC start in an Airbase-style structure, complete with working Marvins and a tank repair garage. Some areas throughout the map will be "glitching out", providing landmarks that remind you that you’re fighting in a virtual simulator."

War Games is focused around a large central tower with a claustrophobic tunnel network, around which several themed simulation zones offer different engagement ranges and opportunties. A slice of Angel City is on hand for rooftop/window urban warfare, while the outskirts are crisp and minimalist, more Tron than Titanfall and thus allowing for easy target acquisition.

Heatmaps and player feedback was used to carefully link areas with wallrun-friendly geometry. "As a designer, I wanted to have the freedom to place wallrun paths wherever I needed them, to connect important areas together," McCord continued. "After running around the training mission looking for inspiration, I realized the colored force fields could make a fun wallrunning panel. These are found throughout the map and sometimes stretch across long distances, above battling Titans below. These are meant to be obvious paths to help encourage players that haven't embraced this new way of traversing maps. Because of the environment."

It's an odd inclusion in a DLC pack entitled 'Expedition,' especially since its two fellows are based in swamps and temples. Still, more Titanfall can only be a good thing - and the map pack will only weigh in at around £7.99.

What do you make of War Games - and what do you want from Titanfall in the long run? Have you stopped playing it and need a reason to go back? Have any suggestions or tweaks?

Personally I reckon that the Carbine needs to be rebalanced and made more situational (since it renders the other weapons and sidearms pointless), while shorter lobby timers couldn't hurt. And then, when all that's sorted, about FIVE new modes would be good. I'm not particularly bothered by frippery like visual customisation, but I know plenty of players need it.  Drop us a line in the comments!

Still loving the game (though struggling with the "Gooser" challenge to allow me to progress from gen 5 to gen 6) but as you say, the game really needs a handful of new game modes adding. Personally I've spent about 90% of my time playing Hardpoint, and 10% playing Attrition (and most of that Attrition was just because I wanted the achievements for finishing the "campaign"). I've played one game each of the other game modes and just didn't take to them.

I'd love a new mode akin to Search & Destroy from the CoD franchise; and some sort of infection/zombie/survival mode where the NPCs get progressively tougher as the match progresses.

Plus the customisation options you mentioned. Sad as it may be, I could happily while away hours making logos etc. for my titans! :D

I didn't dislike any of the maps from the initial batch (which is quite incredible - you'd think there'd be at least one or two you don't like (Rise is my least favourite map, but I definitely don't hate it)) so I'm sure the three new ones will be good. Just a shame there's only three, though. I appreciate the pack is cheaper than most map packs for rival games - but, taking COD as the most obvious comparison, you usually get four new maps, a whole new story/adventure with zombies/aliens, and a new gun.

Rise is one of my favorite maps, it's possible to get from point A to point C without touching the ground. It's a wall running / rope sliding paradise :D

Least favorite map has to be Corporate, for some reason the game thinks I love it and always seem to end up there. 15 maps to choose from and I get dumped into this one pretty much every time. I guess people leave when it appears in their rotation and thus joining players end up filling in the space.
