Tomb Raider Reboot Slips Into 2013

Decision “The Right Choice” For The Game

Yet another title has been delayed until next year, this time the Tomb Raider reboot being the game in question. Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrel Gallagher issues a statement on the Eidos forums to explain the reasoning behind the move. We’ve got the full statement, and a brand new screenshot, after the jump.

A Message to the Tomb Raider Community

When Crystal Dynamics first set out to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise, there were two goals that we were extremely passionate about. The first was to create a modern Tomb Raider game that would surprise and excite gamers. The second was to make this the best game of our careers, something we would be really proud to be a part of. We truly believe that we have something very special on our hands and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest quality game. In order to do this, we have decided to move the game’s release date by a few months, from Fall 2012 to the first quarter of 2013.

We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait. The game is looking amazing and we can't wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.

Darrell Gallagher

While this will no doubt be a disappointment for many, as the game was looking incredibly compellingwhen we last saw it in action, this is almost certainly a good thing in the long run. With Hitman: Absolution getting a confirmed November launch in a period that is always crowded with the big industry hitters, this delay will allow more of a focus on Lara’s return when it does hit, as well as giving the devs more time to polish the final product. You can find the forum post on the official website here.

In the meantime, to keep the excitement level from falling too far, the forum post also revealed a brand new shot of Lara in action, jumping through the trees and hanging out with corpses. You can see if for yourself below.

Damn it!

Still, I would take a good game over an on time game any day of the week, so fair play to them.

Can we expect any games this year, or is the gaming industry just having a year off?
Main two games I was looking forward to in 2012 were Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider... :(
