Tomb Raider Trailer Debuts New Lara

One of gaming's most iconic characters is set to be given a makeover this year with 'Tomb Raider', releasing on X360, PS3, and PC, and the debut trailer has been revealed today.  Expect some intense over-enunciation, an almost constant 'uncanny valley' sense of unease, and a surprising amount of the red stuff for the new and more vulnerable Ms. Croft's debut.

Crystal Dynamics art director Brian Horton revealed to gameinformer that taking the First Lady of gaming off her pedestal was the team's first priority:

What dropped away pretty quickly was the hardness that she had. She is strong and we love Lara Croft for that strength, but she was almost so strong that we were always one step away from her. That was one thing that we all agreed on right away – to try and soften her up enough so that you could step into her life. All of the character design decisions came from trying to make her believable. We didn’t want to make her a sexual object. She is a character that we want you to believe in.

This trailer supposedly depicts the wreck that will begin the game, landing you on a deserted island, the resources of which you must manipulate in order to survive.  The developers cite TV show 'Lost', the Uncharted games, and even Batman's origin story in 'Batman Begins' as the key influences for the reboot.

Needless to say, we're very excited to see more from this darker, grittier Lara at E3, and we'll be relaying any information we get as we get it, straight back to the site.  Watch this space.

Love it, been a while since I've been excited for a Tomb Raider game but that won me over!

Yeah it's definitely showing a lot of promise at this stage. Going to be keeping a close eye on it myself. Guardian of Light was great, but it didn't really feel like a Tomb Raider game. It's about time Lara made a comeback and showed all the young upstarts who's boss.

Looks fantastic from that trailer (though there's no indication of what the actual gameplay is like, of course), but I wonder is she still an archeologist who goes around ... well ... raiding tombs? Because if she isn't then it's not Tomb Raider is it - it's something different but using that name... :\

From what I hear it will be very different from before. Think open-world (on a spooky island at least) survival horror. Levelling up strengths to reach new areas (alarm bells of TR: Angel of Darkness misery?).

Her voice drives me nuts. As long as she's not going to blather on about 'adventure found me' every two minutes, it'll be fine. I'm a bit sick of the ad popping up every two minutes on youTube though.

Gameplay footage at e3 please!

She doesn't look like Lara at all! She doesn't sound liek Lara either!

What the hell did SQUARE ENIX and CRYSTAL DYNAMICS do!

They just ruined the franchise. Should have know that Lara would get a plastic surgery and a larynx surgery when Eidos were bought!

Check out the E3 demo here and see if it'll change your mind:

I'm personally very excited about the direction it's moving in, I can only hope the platforming is as solid as the presentation.
