One of gaming's most iconic characters is set to be given a makeover this year with 'Tomb Raider', releasing on X360, PS3, and PC, and the debut trailer has been revealed today. Expect some intense over-enunciation, an almost constant 'uncanny valley' sense of unease, and a surprising amount of the red stuff for the new and more vulnerable Ms. Croft's debut.
Crystal Dynamics art director Brian Horton revealed to gameinformer that taking the First Lady of gaming off her pedestal was the team's first priority:
What dropped away pretty quickly was the hardness that she had. She is strong and we love Lara Croft for that strength, but she was almost so strong that we were always one step away from her. That was one thing that we all agreed on right away – to try and soften her up enough so that you could step into her life. All of the character design decisions came from trying to make her believable. We didn’t want to make her a sexual object. She is a character that we want you to believe in.
This trailer supposedly depicts the wreck that will begin the game, landing you on a deserted island, the resources of which you must manipulate in order to survive. The developers cite TV show 'Lost', the Uncharted games, and even Batman's origin story in 'Batman Begins' as the key influences for the reboot.
Needless to say, we're very excited to see more from this darker, grittier Lara at E3, and we'll be relaying any information we get as we get it, straight back to the site. Watch this space.
