The Gears of War 3 public beta is in full swing now, as thousands upon millions of Marcus Fenix's and Savage Theron's do battle across a variety of soon-to-be-very-messy stages. Gears has never shied away violence, and the game is so profusely blood-soaked it's a wonder no-one slips over in all the muck and viscera.
We've been covering the beta for a week now, and with our mettle truly tested, we've returned from the front-lines to bring you the definitive recap on the best ways to finish off a downed enemy. So, without further ado, may we present The Top Ten Gears of War 3 Beta Executions!
It's not particularly elegant, but the Gnasher's execution is decidedly satisfying. With your victim crawling at your feet, you swing the Gnasher round to grab the opposite end, then club off your downed enemy's head! Skulls have a habit of exploding in Gears of War - namely if you're last name is Carmine - and the cranium-splattering doesn't stop in the third iteration?
The new and improved Hammerburst is our favorite weapon in the Gears of War 3 beta thus far, with its precision aiming and fearsome stopping-power. And once you've pumped an enemy so full of lead they fall to their knees in a pool of sticky blood, it's time to execute your plan. Standing over them, you proceed to bash, bash, bash their head in until it explodes. It's almost painful to watch, actually.
8. Torque Bow
We're no strangers to the Torque Bow's execution, having pried off many a head in Gears of War 2. But that doesn't mean we don't love it any less so the third time around! Hooking the gun's curved side around your foe's neck, you lock their head in place before thrusting a boot down and lopping it clean off! Very efficient.
Ah, the Oneshot, Epic's self-proclaimed 'elephant gun'. The Oneshot's execution is pretty simple; with your enemy on their knees, you proceed to lift the enormous weapon high above your head before bringing it down on theirs'. It's not pretty. However, it's quite a difficult execution to pull off, as the Oneshot slows you down considerably as you waddle over to rub salt into the wound.
I'm a little peeved the Gorgon no longer fires in brutal three-round bursts, but I can't deny how much I love executing fools with it! First off, the execution is entirely unnecessarily brutal. Instead of just smacking in your opponent's head, you decide to break their arm first. Then you smack in their head. Safety first, folks. Wear your helmets!
The Sawed-Off is set to be a divisive weapon amongst Gears folk, but I think we can all agree it's execution is bloody fantastic! Lowering the double-barrel, you hook that around your enemy's neck then thrust the two ends back together, popping their head off like a cork! Seriously, Epic; what's your problem with heads?
Fan-favorite the Lancer has remained pretty much unchanged since its inception, mixing good stopping-power with decent range and accuracy with a nice healthy clip, to boot. You can already perform a pretty brutal kill by simply chainsawing an unsuspecting enemy, but if they're down and out, run on over and stuff that revved-up saw in their chest and watch the viscera fly!
I love the Digger, especially how its little critter-explosive can be heard munching away underneath the ground as it burrows towards you! If you'd rather execute your enemy than splatter them into a dozen messy pieces, then run on over to a downed foe and hold Y. Swatting the enemy round with a firm slip, you then kick them in the head as their in mid-spin. Impressive!
2. Retro Lancer
Like its successor, the Retro Lancer can already perform a brutal take-down if your charge hits home. However, find an enemy crawling in their own blood and viscera and you'll be treated to a particularly brutal execution. First, you thrust the jagged bayonet blade into their ribs, puncturing the lung. Then, the coup de grace, as you swing the blade across their throat, severing the carotid artery and putting an end to their opposition.
It had to be the Scorcher, didn't it? What other weapon allows you to stuff the barrel up an enemy's rear-end, pulling the trigger and roasting them from the inside out, with a stream of blood-infused fire pouring from their mouth? It's brutal, it's painful to watch, and for some reason it makes me very, very hungry. I wonder what Locust tastes like?
And so ends a particularly blood-soaked and cranium-splattered top ten! Why not chime in and tell us what your favorite Gears of War 3 beta executions are? Go on, you know you want to!
