Top Ten Tuesdays | Great Xbox Live Indie Games We Missed!

Time makes fools of us all, and never more so than in the ridiculous holiday season. With so many massive games and megaton announcements to keep abreast of, I've had to take my eye off the Xbox Live Indie scene for a little while... at the exact moment when a huge number of exceptional games have been hitting the service.

This will not stand.  I'll try to relaunch our Xbox Live Indie Game Of The Week column as soon as possible, but for now, here are ten fantastic recent games that you should get on your hard drive as quickly as you can. At the very least, click through the links and queue up some trial versions!

10: CastleMiner Z

Oh lord, another MineCraft/FortressCraft knock-off? No, not quite. The solid voxel block building mechanics are as familiar and satisfying as ever, but CastleMiner Z ups the ante by throwing in a zombie apocalypse. You'll need to craft fortifications and new weapons to survive their onslaught, which is an incredibly rewarding and addictive experience.

9: WARR

WARR is a bit like Risk, only better and much cheaper. The battle for global domination is slick, colourful and accessible, with the ability to position troops and counter offensives making it stand out against its less fully-featured brethren. Definitely worth a punt for strategy fans.

8: Blocky

Xbox Live Indie Games aren't afraid to make with the strange, and Blocky is more than a little weird. At its most basic level, you'll control a happy smiling block who needs to avoid enemies, with each level giving you different challenges and environmental hazards to overcome. The art style hovers somewhere between psychadelic and psychotic, but now that the terrible bosses have been nerfed in a recent patch, I feel I should bring this odd yet compelling little game to your attention.

7: Grand Class Melee

Grand Class Melee is a sensational multiplayer brawler that lets you customise your characters to suit your play style. A bountiful cornucopia of classes, skills and strategies are on offer, making for a fighting game that never provides the same experience twice. If you're a fan of riotous single-screen shenanigans, grab some beers, round up your mates and get involved.

6: Mega Shooter 11

No Xbox Live Indie list is complete without an authentic retro SHMUP, and Mega Shooter 11 does the business. Everything from the pixel graphics to the hilarious dialogue will bring back overwhelming waves of nostalgia... and the gameplay is as sweet and tight as any modern title. My feelings towards this particular title only be described as lustful and obscene; I want to massage and lick it all over. Just buy it already.

5: Flowrider

Flowrider is probably one of the most polished titles I've ever seen on the Xbox Live Indie service. Its pin-sharp visuals, colourful art style and precise controls raise it above the rank and file, basically delivering the classic Micro Machines experience revamped to 21st century standards with analog stick movement and orgasmic retinal titillation. Great multiplayer modes cement Flowrider as a truly essential purchase.

4: Escape Goat

Escape Goat is a retro-tough puzzly platformer developed by the team behind the Soulcaster series. If you get tired of the fantastic selection of puzzles, polished mechanics and varied enemies, you can always just go ahead and make your own levels using the supplied editor; providing essentially unlimited value for its meagre asking price. Don't let this goat escape!

3: LightFish

Top Ten Tuesdays | Great Xbox Live Indie Games We Missed!

This cross-platform beauty is essentially a next-gen reimagination of Qix. As the titular LightFish, you'll draw neon lines across the screen to segregate the levels and trap foes, but you'll need sharp reflexes to avoid being devoured or destroyed yourself. It's much cheaper on XBLIG than anywhere else, and it's a fantastic, wonderful bargain thanks to the bevy of content. Get on it.

2: DLC Quest

We love it when games poke fun at the depressing slew of downloadable content that defines current publisher policies, and DLC Quest goes one step further by actually making it into a main game mechanic. You'll need to collect coins to unlock most of the game's features: right down to purchasing the ability to jump, animations and being able to move backwards. Multiple completions and a constantly-evolving gameplay experience make this little gem an anarchic and brilliant use of 80 Microsoft Points.

1:Wizorb

Breakout clones are ten a penny, but Wizorb deserves to be heralded as a sumptuous and innovative fantasy take on the traditional formula. Technically tight mechanics and major boss fights are augmented by loot and magical upgrades, making the already-addictive experience a truly masterful and satisfying experience. Wizorb is enjoying modest success on the PC - though it's just as brilliant for Xbox 360 owners alike.
