Hey kids! Did you love How To Train Your Dragon from Dreamworks Pictures? You did?! So did the mums over on our sister site PlayPennies. So start bugging your parents to buy you the game of the movie!
Here we go again. Luckily, parents, ShopTo are currently selling the PS3 version of How To Train Your Dragon for £18.85; which will save you a fiver compared to their next cheapest competitor (Amazon in this case).
Most people approach family film tie-ins with suspicion and trepidation usually reserved for sleeping crocodiles... and in this case, it's fairly justified. Whilst How To Train Your Dragon is a fairly pretty little title (as is often the case for games based on CGI movies), but the actual gameplay is fairly lacking (as is almost always the case with films based on CGI movies).
Rather than a linear platformer, HOTYD requires you to train up a selection of dragons for some cramped one-on-one arena combat. Training involves pulling off finnicky combos and engaging in some forgettable minigames, with the actual arena fights being lessons in button mashing skill-less drudge. It's fairly lengthy and there's plenty to do (especially if you're hunting down the trophy for every last dragon), but it boils down to a shallow little game that doesn't quite find a particular target audience.
Unless your kids are hollering at you for this one, I'd strongly consider picking up the infinitely superior Kung Fu Panda instead. It's one of the Dreamworks film tie-ins that truly breaks the mold.
