Last month, we brought you news that Hasbro was planning a number of upcoming Transformers titles, including an MMO. Well Hasbro has officially confirmed the game, due in 2012 with development being headed up at Jagex Limited, developers of the most popular free-to-play MMO in the world, RuneScape.
Little to nothing has actually been revealed on the game itself, although it's likely it'll be a browser-based, PC-exclusive in keeping with Jagex's usual policy. However, I wouldn't rule out a console or even portable version just yet, as the Transformers brand is proving to be very successful as a mass-media product, so I doubt Hasbro will want to limit it to a single platform unless they absolutely have to.
They're pretty psyched, too, and rightly so, as securing Jagex as developers is quite the coup. "Hasbro's decision to align with Jagex speaks to the quality of their award-winning development and publishing team that boasts an outstanding track record of delivering innovative and fun online games capable of reaching millions of gamers across the globe," explains Mark Blecher, who oversees Hasbro's Digital Gaming strategies.
Jagex seem pretty pleased, too, with their CEO, Mark Gerhard, remarking "Transformers is one of the most iconic brands in the world and we are delighted to team up with Hasbro in order to bring our shared vision to reality," before stating his team's ambition to provide "a dynamic and action-packed game that Transformers fans will find irresistible". We'll keep you covered on this as more is revealed. [Electronic Theater]
