Tripwire: "Call of Duty Has Almost Ruined A Generation of FPS Players"

Tripwire’s president John Gibson is not happy with current crop of shooters. Singleplayer experiences in  the genre are getting better, according to Gibson, but the Red Orchestra developer feels that Call of Duty's stranglehold on the genre has "almost ruined a generation of FPS players" when it comes to multiplayer.

“I think that single-player shooters are getting better,” he replied. “I think they’re finally coming out from under the shadow of the Hollywood movie, overblown 'I’m on a rail' linear shooter. I’m talking about Call of Duty-style shooters.

“The melding of RPG elements and shooter elements has been great. I’ve seen this reflected in a lot of the reviews, it’s like, 'Okay guys, we’re tired of this on-rails experience.'

“On the flip side, I’m really discouraged by the current state of multiplayer shooters. I think that, and I hate to mention names, because it sounds like ‘I’m just jealous of their success,’ but I’m really, I feel like Call of Duty has almost ruined a generation of FPS players.

“I know that’s a bold statement, but I won’t just throw stones without backing it up. When I was developing Action Mode [for RO2], I got a group of people that I know that are pretty hardcore Call of Duty players. And my goal was to create something that was accessible enough for them to enjoy the game—not turn it into Call of Duty, but try to make something that I thought was casual enough but with the Red Orchestra gameplay style that they would enjoy.

“And we iterated on it a lot. And just listening to all the niggling, pedantic things that they would complain about, that made them not want to play the game, I just thought, 'I give up. Call of Duty has ruined this whole generation of gamers.'”

It really hasn't. People will play the type of game they want to play. If you put them in front of a different type of game when they want to play what they were playing before then they're not going to have nearly as much fun with what they have in front of them now.

It's the same for anything really. RO2 is a very different type of shooter to Call of Duty as it's far more realistic with the pacing, controls, feel, map design and weapons all being completely different.

Not everyone plays Call of Duty and RO2 doesn't appeal to a lot of people. He should stop blaming CoD for his game not appealing to people.

You asked people what they wanted, they told you, and you think them whining pedants?
Yeah, give up mate. Let someone else take the reins.
Giving the people what they want is fairly crucial in your industry.

He is talking about hardcore cod fanboys though. Ill admit i do like cod, but it hasn't a patch on the BF series when your in a squad.

The COD series i find is a "lonewolf", "pick up and play" series, everyone can have a bash, and people succumb to peer pressure give in and buy, im sure half the readers of this site have bought it, just because all their mates, even though "im never buying cod again" lol

There are some great unique titles out there that each have their own positives, but its all about COD to this newer generation, and quite frankly its shocking because the game is awful, every year a new skin pack comes out, and every year people buy it.

... and *every year they rack up hundreds of hours playing it.

It's doing something right.

*almost every year. Hated MW3, personally.

Your opinion isn't everyone else's. CoD is doing something right so people buy it and they enjoy it. It's not because of peer pressure. They don't really appeal to me too much these days but they're great games and definitely not the same game being released over and over. There's a lot of differences between the games you'll find just by playing them.

I see many people of all ages playing completely different shooters and only a few play RO2 every so often. He's just annoyed that his game doesn't appeal to people as much as the CoD games and used a terrible example of asking CoD player to play his game and tell him what they didn't like.

People didn't like his game - there's something wrong with fps players...

Seems legit.
