The Xbox 360 headset is an essential for taking part in team-based multiplayer, but it's a shame that the official headset is a fragile and delicate flower that falls apart at the slightest provocation. Most gamers eventually seek out a sturdier third party offering- and the Turtle Beach XLC headset is a solid option for a gamer on a budget. 7DayShop are currently retailing at £19.99 including delivery, which will save you a fiver compared to its nearest competitor, The Hut. Note that there are a couple of lower prices circling about, but they don't include delivery (or VAT in most cases).
The XLC is a nifty piece of kit, but it certainly isn't for everyone. In fact, there are a couple of important caveats we need to deal with right off the bat.
The first thing you'll notice about the XLC is that it's closed ear. You'll need to line out your audio from the Xbox using the supplied cables, which can lead to a fair bit of unsightly wiring. Gamers with a decent sound system should opt for a single-ear headset or throat mike, but the XLC's stereo sound quality is more than enough for multiplayer gaming. It's also a fantastic purchase if you frequently game at night- as you'll be able to frag away to your heart's content without waking up your housemates, neighbors or the baby! [Note that the sound quality increases exponentially if you connect it to an amplifier- Ed]
Secondly, the XLC is definitely a mid-range option. Whilst the sound quality is good for the price; if you're absolutely serious about your teamtalk, you'll want to fork over the 40 bills for an X11 or nearest equivalent. However, the vast majority of gamers will be more than satisfied with it.
In short, the XLC is a solid, capable headset that's built to last... and your neighbors will probably thank God for it!
