Well it had been rumoured, and Ueda's reiteration of commitment to The Last Guardian did little to allay the fears amongst the fanboys, but now it has at last been confirmed: Fumito Ueda is no longer a Sony employee, and will be completing his work on Team ICO's latest project as a freelancer.
Ueda joined Sony back in 1997 having completed animation work on Saturn horror-fest, he formed internal studio Team ICO, and set about creating two of the finest games of any generation in Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. We've been eagerly anticipating The Last Guardian since it was teased at E3 back in 2009, but the rumoured release date for this year was pushed back.
Last week producer Yoshifusa Hayama also left Sony, bound for UK casual gaming startup Bossa Studios. It is unclear as to what lies ahead for Ueda beyond The Last Guardian. Frankly we don't really mind who Ueda's working for, but we'd love to see him continue to make the visually stunning, thought provoking epics for which he and his team have been renowned. [Gamasutra]
