UMD Passport Will Let PSP Owners Buy Their Games Again, With Discount

With the exception of downloadable titles, the upcoming PS Vita will not be compatible with PSP games due to its lack of a UMD drive. However, Sony plans to solve the problem of backwards compatibility with the UMD Passport application that will allow PSP owners to re-download games they already own.

Not for free, mind you. No no. With a discount.

The Passport system will be rolling out in Japan ahead of the Vita's Christmas launch, and it works by downloading the app onto your PSP, booting it up and inserting the UMDs you own. The application will take care of the rest by syncing the details with your PSN account. Note that each UMD can only be registered with one account - so no cheating I'm afraid. From there, you can merrily download it at a discounted price level... or, you know, just keep playing it on your PSP that you'll already need to own in order to use the app in the first place. Just sayin'.

will the vita make psp games look better or worse?

JonLester  Nov. 11, 2011 at 11:15

@Gunn: Yes, probably. Apparently the Vita will feature a graphics smoothing filter that will clear up some of the murkier titles.

I believe that second thumbstick support will also be added to certain titles - which means it might be worth using the Passport for certain choice games.

nice, how about trophy support too while they are at it

@Gunn: Yeah, that would be great. Sadly, since trophies are a marketing device designed to sell new games... actually, hang about, that could work as an incentive to use the scheme and spend extra money. I wouldn't hold your breath, though, as it would probably be prohibitively difficult to implement on a large scale.

I dont suppose there is any plans for this service for PSone titles via ps3? It would have to be a pretty heavy discount anyway to make me think about it. I dont feel i should have to but FFVII again!

This is stupid ridiculous. Just keep your PSP and play it on there. What a waste. I'm not paying to play my games again. Idiotic mess, thank you Sony for making consumer lives' hell.
