what metal do you need?

Ebony, surprisingly enough. Skyrim seems to think it's a metal, and it is available in ingot form, even though your average Joe on the street would consider it a wood

Ebony ingots are available for a price (400+ septims) from most blacksmiths, or a couple of specialist mines (Gloombound Mine springs to mind)

You'll also need the Ebony Smithing perk from the smithing skill tree, which requires either 70 or 80 smithing skill to activate
