'We're A Long Way From Shipping Any Sort Of Hardware'
Compelling rumours about a potential Valve console - dubbed the Steam Box - have been doing the rounds of late, backed up by patents and testimony from a Valve employee who's been working on hardware for the company. However, Head Of Marketing Doug Lombardi has spoken out to squash the story, instead stating that the hardware is just a test box rather than a potential game changer.
The 'Steam Box,' Lombardi argues, is simply a matter of us putting two and two together and making five. The hardware in question was apparently just a test rig for Valve's newly-released Big Picture Mode, while the biometric controller patents represent products in the brainstorming stages.
We're prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we're building boxes to test that on.
We're also doing a bunch of different experiments with biometric feedback and stuff like that, which we've talked about a fair amount. All of that is stuff that we're working on, but it's a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware.
Interestingly, though, Lombardi didn't actually deny that Valve are planning on bringing out a console or set top box - just that we shouldn't expect an announcement "any time soon."
Whether we're talking about Valve making hardware or partnering with others, nothing like that is happening any time soon.
So there. For now. [Kotaku]
