Vigil Ditched Darksiders 2 Multiplayer

Darksiders was originally planned as a co-operative adventure with all four Horsemen on show, but the idea was eventually ditched - and then teased at the end! We hoped Vigil might resurrect their co-op ambition in the sequel, but in a chat with IGN, the studio has revealed the idea was once again abandoned in favor of a lone star; Death.

"[Multiplayer] has been something we've been wanting to do since DS1," reveals game director Marvin Donald. "You almost have to make four games. You've got completely different animation sets. It's 800 to 1000 animations for Death alone and they're all unique." Donald explains that art director and comic-book legend Joe Madureira's designs are so unique, Vigil can't simply copy and paste animations and attributes across all four potential Horsemen.

Instead, they've opted to focus on Death, War's pale-skinned brother. A far more graceful and athletic combatant than the lumbering, punishing War, Death can also customize his armor and load-outs far more comprehensively, with loot drops and a beefed-up RPG system resulting in a far meatier experience to sink your teeth into.

However, if Darksiders 2 does as well as its predecessor and prompts a third game in the series, Donald reveals that multiplayer is "definitely something they want". We'll have to wait and see, then. [IGN]
