If you’re still reeling from the highs and lows of Wimbledon and feel like it all flashed by too quickly, why not get your hands on Virtua Tennis 2009 on PS3. Currently the game is going for £24.48 on coolshop which, according to price comparison, gives you a nice saving of over £7 on the next best offer of £31.99.
Virtua Tennis 2009 is a game which more or less sticks to the classic tennis game format which we’ve all experienced in previous titles like Power Smash and Sega Sports Tennis. However the biggest problem with gameplay according to Gamespot is that it’s ridiculously easy. The opponent AI is shockingly bad, and simply making contact with the ball assures you a flawless return which almost never goes out.
The bulk of the game consists of its World Tour Mode in which the player must gradually chip away at their overall world ranking. Beginning at about number 100 the player must achieve higher status by taking part in international tournaments. However, thanks to the game’s low difficulty, matches are neither challenging nor entertaining. Gamespot argue that after around ten hours of continuous gameplay against diabolically dreadful opponents you finally attain top ranking.
But the lack of diversity means that reaching this goal in Virtua Tennis is more of a chore than a challenge. The multiplayer mode does salvage things somewhat because it eclipses the awful AI. However multiplayer is also plagued with it own problems such as lagging and all sorts of inconsistencies like being able to return a ball which has bounced twice. Overall, with its dull and repetitive gameplay Virtua Tennis 2009 is unfortunately one the worst editions to the franchise. However this is what Gamespot argue, and if you have an entirely different take why not comment below.
