Direct2Drive are currently running a promotion on the casual Virtual Villagers series, with each of the three titles (A New Home, The Lost Children, and The Secret City) reduced from £5.99 to £2.98. This will save you a couple of quid compared to Steam - and essentially provides you with two games for the price of one. Virtual Villagers lets you breed, command and interfere with the daily lives of tribes of villagers - providing an addictive casual thrill that can occasionally drag due to the real-time mechanics. It's also all too easy to max out on everything fairly quickly, but if you're looking for a cheap and cheerful diversion, this might well float your boat.
