After a fairly lukewarm Japanese reception last year, Sony has announced that the PS Vita has garnered over 1.2 million sales thanks to a fantastically successful European and US launch. The Vita has been flying off the shelves since last Wednesday, and incredibly strong software sales have allowed three of its launch titles to enter the UK top ten - two of which are at the very top (an amazing achievement for a new handheld console).
Sony believes that these sales prove a demand for dedicated handheld gaming systems in an age increasingly dominated by smartphones and tablets, and we've got their full statement after the break.
PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the reaction we’re seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling.
The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context. To sustain momentum, we’re working closely with 3rd party developers and publishers to ensure the best games and franchises possible will be available on PS Vita, and our software line up for the remainder of 2012 will have something for everyone across the globe. - SCEI president Andy House.
The Vita is a fantastic piece of kit, and I'd recommend that you check out our PS Vita hardware review for Brendan's definitive analysis.
