It has to be the Valve games, they have been so revolutionary in pushing the FPS genre to the next level, with their gripping storylines, physics implementation & superb multiplayer.

Most of the modern shooters have taken a leaf or two out of Valve's book.

Too tough. Depending on my mood, I could easily vote for 3 or 4 of the choices here...

Agreed when it comes to valve games, halflife was epic and the CS series are the best!.

All the ones listed Bar cod are great but CSS and CS 1.6 have been the best FPS shooters to be honest, thats why they are used in proper gaming leagues so much still as they are solid games!.

Bioshock! Best atmosphere and story, intelligent gameplay aswell.

Had to go for Rare (obviously ignoring Perfect Dark Zero here).

Spent more hours playing Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64 than all the Valve and Battlefield games combined.

...but even though I've never seen the appeal of TF2 (despite trying repeatedly), Valve just edges it for me on the strength of the Half-Life series alone. (C'mon Valve, Episode 3, please?).

Honourable mentions go to Halo, CoD (except Black Ops, which I found to be dire), Unreal Tournament and the daddy of them all, Doom. (Would have said MoH as well, but too many average entries after Allied Assault)...

I have to go with the Call of Duty series! I've always been a big fan of the single player campaigns and the multiplayer beats Counter Strike with variety!

I voted for Valve because everything they touch turns to gold - if only they touched it more often (half life 2 episode 3 please!)

Pushing the PC, I'm going to ask why Dark Forces/Jedi Knight isn't on the list. It should be.

Matt Gardner  Mar. 22, 2011 at 22:54

I still have the PC Gamer that came with the Dark Forces demo disc kicking around somewhere...cracking series!

Music Rab  Mar. 22, 2011 at 22:58

Still on PC, I vote for Outlaws. Where's the sequel?

MrRichTea  Mar. 23, 2011 at 00:24

BIOSHOCK, WHY IS THIS NOT IN THE LIST!!!

Matt Gardner  Mar. 23, 2011 at 00:35

It is...under the System Shock entry

Johnny S  Mar. 23, 2011 at 02:31

Are you guys dumb?? no timesplitters = EPIC FAIL, lulul. smh @ whoever made this list.

James  Mar. 23, 2011 at 07:10

Got to be the Battlefield series - i've never played a demo so much than the Battlefield 1942 demo on Wake Island ! Its just so much more fun than Call of Duty, can't beat filling a humvee full of c4 and driving it into a tank, or the helicopter and plane fights :D

No Wolfenstein? I can remember playing Wolfenstein 3D to death 1n 1992 (showing my age), then again with Return to Castle Wolfenstein in 2001.

The only FPS I've ever really enjoyed is Resistance: Fall of Man. Most of them give me crippling motion sickness, and I don't really like the gameplay either.

Bourne_Tragedy  Mar. 23, 2011 at 10:05

Talk about tough morning decisions... I wanted to say RARE for GoldenEye, but that's a specific game instead of the series. Instead went with Value: Half-Life, L4D, Portal and soon to be Portal 2, it would be foolish not to.

chelmsfordman  Mar. 23, 2011 at 10:05

As with all these votes more recent games will score highly. You should do a vote but limit to those wqho have been in and around gaming for at least 2 or 3 generations, as otherwise your only gonna get Call of Duty votes as these people cant comment genius that was Half life / counter strike. Or just how brillaint Deus Ex was.

Sy  Mar. 23, 2011 at 10:08

The Bioshock games got my vote purely for the Single Player aspect.

David Brown  Mar. 23, 2011 at 10:32

Dooooooooooooooom

Jonathan Lester  Mar. 23, 2011 at 10:41

Serious Sam, you pansies.

LanceVance  Mar. 23, 2011 at 10:43

What, no Ghost Recon?!?!

Lemming  Mar. 23, 2011 at 11:05

I have to go with Valve here as they pretty much set the standard for PC FPS. Battlefield 1942 and 2 would be a close second but they are let down by more recent releases. Call of duty is reasonable but the multiplayer never felt as even as half life. All the unlockables makes it very unbalanced for new players.

ODB  Mar. 23, 2011 at 11:58

Was going to vote Valve for everything they have done BUT decided to go with COD...though I could easily pick a few

COD4 set the standard for this generations FPS and though the rest havent been quite to the same scale they have still defined the MP experience...just about every FPS gets compared to COD with every single MP FPS definitely compared to COD. So I'd hand it to them for the MP alone. I dont think any other game AT THE TIME gave you so much 'bang for your buck' so the original £40 was well worth it, SP not that long? Head over to MP and spend the rest of the year online. Lets be honest with every game being different you could quite easily own just this one game on your PS3/360 and not need to buy anything else
