New Wii Ditches Backwards Compatibility

But Skyward Sword Is Dated

So, Nintendo has just announced a new and redesigned Wii model which will probably coincide with a price-cut as we approach the release of its successor, the Wii U, with Nintendo looking to milk as much profit from their current console until it is replaced. However, your entire library of GameCube games might soon become obsolete; as Nintendo is slashing backwards-compatibility from the new Wii.

Nintendo haven't commented on the matter yet, but they'll probably be forced to as the angry fan-tirade looms ominously over the next few days. Quite why they've opted to remove GameCube backwards compatibility is a mystery; it's most likely a cost-cutting method, removing the GameCube ports and whatnot to save on production costs. Or is it a concerted effort to move their fan-base away from the past and closer to the upcoming Wii U? Who knows.

What we do finally know now, however, is when upcoming Zelda title, Skyward Sword, will be released. November 18th is the date, so pencil it in your diaries, calendars or - if you're a real fan - ink it onto your very forehead and tell the world! [Eurogamer]
