As reported back in April, Tecmo Koei are working on a Wii U exclusive sequel to the Project Zero series, the niche yet insanely terrifying survival horror experience that makes us fight ghosts with nothing more than a supernatural camera. The first trailer and details have now been revealed, outing the project as Project Zero 5: The Raven-Haired Shrine Maiden (or Fatal Frame 5... or Zero: Nuregarasu no Miko... talk about an identity crisis).
By the looks of things, our new protagonist stumbles into a horrific set of circumstances involving a mysterious -- and let's face it, probably dead and vengeful -- shrine maiden. Setting out into a dark forest presumably in search of practical legwear (seriously, she's wearing a... strap? Who wears a strap?!), she finds herself at the mercy of a cadre of terrifying ghosts and armed with an updated version of the camera obscura.
So far so good, but the bad news is that a Western release absolutely hasn't been confirmed, despite the relatively small yet focal fanbase. We hope that, given the resurgence of the survival horror genre as proved by Outlast and even The Last Of Us, Nintendo and Tecmo will see fit to bring it over in due time.
You know, since the hardware is region-locked. To bring things full-circle: booooooo!
Naturally we'll keep an eye on it.
