Fan-Made Project A Decade In The Making
Well here’s something I never thought I’d be reporting on. Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn, a fan-made project based on Origin Worlds’ Space Combat Sim franchise Wing Commander that has been in the making for 10 years, will finally unleash the fruits of its labour on Thursday.
The project has hit mainstream news thanks to a misreported quote which mistakenly assumed the project had the blessing of EA and the series creator Chris Roberts. Project lead Tolwyn has since issued a response to clarify the intent of his original statement.
We are not officially or unofficially sanctioned or endorsed by Chris Roberts, Origin, or EA. We are thankful to them for permitting us to make Saga- as manifested by them taking no action to shut us down but allowing us to develop it, just as they have done with other projects like Standoff and Privateer: Gemini Gold- but they have in no way, shape, or form sanctioned our project, nor have they done anything to make it official. They have not contacted us and we have not discussed it with them. Once again, we are thankful that they are permitting us to do this, but no endorsement of Saga by these entities should be implied from that fact.
The game, made by a team of eleven enthusiasts, has been created using a modified version of the Freespace 2 engine, and will be free to download thanks to the source code being released into the public domain several years ago. Saga will be set during the events of Wing Commander III, covering the conclusion of the Terran Confederation's war with the ruthless Kilrathi. It may not have Maniac’s quips, Vaquero’s guitar, or Cobra angrily sharpening a knife, but it will contain a brand new story set over 55 missions complete with voice-acting and animated cutscenes.
I remember actively following this project many, many years ago back when I would frequent community website WC CIC (who are still alive and kicking to this day) so to finally see this project reach completion has thrown me into a nostalgic spin. It also gives some hope that we might actually see Black Mesa Source someday. You can watch the Wing Commander Saga launch trailer below, and check out the official website here.
