Cleared For Launch Against Those Damn Cats

As we reported earlier this week, the fan-made game Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn has now been released after a decade of development. The Space Combat Sim homage is available for free from the official website.

In a statement on the official website, project lead Tolwyn reflected on the development which had been put together by a group of 12 people.

"On many occasions, we have referred to Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn as a labor of love. That is truly what it has been for us. Many years ago, Chris Roberts and his team at Origin ignited our imaginations with their innovative, blockbuster Wing Commander series. Our hope has always been that with Wing Commander Saga, we could recapture that excitement and magic to some degree and share it with all of you. Our ten year development process has certainly taught us even more respect for just how innovative and brilliant Chris Roberts and his team are. Our development of Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn is meant as an homage to them and what they achieved, and we would like to thank them and EA, who holds the intellectual property for Wing Commander. We would also like to thank all the sites who have generously offered to provide mirrors for Saga."

With over 50 missions to play through complete with full animated and voiced cutscenes, players will take the role of 2nd Lieutenant David “Sandman” Markham as he fights his way through the conclusion of the Terran Confederation’s brutal war with the feline aggressors that are the Kilrathi. We’ll be sure to give you our impressions of the project in the near future, but we here at Dealspwn are glad to see a return of one of gaming's most iconic franchises, even if it is in an unofficial capacity. You can get hold of Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn here.

Sweet. Its based on the opensourced freespace 2 engine so should look good despite being a little old. (Still love playing that game)
