Gamestation occasionally run an excellent weekend deal, and this one is looking very sweet indeed. This weekend, £9.99 will net you a PS3 or Xbox 360 copy of Wolfenstein: the next gen iteration of Raven's supernatural shooter franchise. This will save you at least £8 compared to most other retailers (TheHut are currently charging £17.93 for the Xbox 360 version).
On a basic level, Wolfenstein is a solid shooter that fails to break from the middle of the pack thanks to the exceptional quality of its FPS rivals. Technically everything works: you shoot a bunch of Nazis with some cool guns, collect hidden treasures and buy some more cool guns... to shoot more Nazis with. The gunplay mechanics work well; and the weapon upgrade system gives you an incentive to explore the levels and ferret out every hidden secret. The cross-functionality with the XBLA version of the original id classic is also a thoughtful feature that'll earn you some serious money early in the game.
As a sequel, however, Wolfenstein is truly disappointing. It's managed to delude itself into believing that it's a sandbox game- and the lack of direction frequently results in the experience being tedious rather than tightly scripted and atmospheric. The new 'veil powers' also feel a bit gimmicky and unnecessary (and frequently makes things far too easy). Come on developers, can't we have one horror FPS sequel where the hero doesn't get cheesy superpowers? Here's looking at you, Monolith.
At the end of the day, Wolfenstein is a capable shooter in its own right and this deal offers exceptional value for money. Unfortunately, there are better shooters out there- but if you're looking for some mindless FPS fun at a knockdown price then you can't really go wrong with this one.
