The Xbox 360 4GB Arcade is soon to be upon us and, frankly, I can't really understand why anyone would want one. The new machines are utterly brilliant and soothingly silent, but why oh why would anyone plump for the version with the tiny hard drive is completely beyond me. Mind you, the Xbox branded flash drives are there if you find you ever need more space...which I'm almost certain that you will.
However, regardless of my withering scepticism, if you want to jump into the Xbox hotseat, this is a pretty good pre-order deal to go for, getting you up and running for under £160 with three fantastic games - Mass Effect 2, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and Need For Speed: Shift - worth at least a tenner each if not more. With the console itself going for around £140 at the moment, you'll be saving yourself somewhere in the region of £10-30.
It's worth noting that this item gets released on the 20th August.
I bought an Xbox just so I could get my hands on Mass Effect, and the sequel is an excellent game that manages to tighten up the action whilst still retaining BioWare's trademark concerns of choice and consequence. True, the main plot twist passes with more of a wet fart than a fanfare, but it's still a cracking game.
This deal is an absolute winner for anyone thinking about dipping their toes into Microsoft's take on console gaming. I'm actually jealous that you get to have a spanking new console with everything working and built in. I may have to arrange an 'accident' for my Jasper model so I can do the same.
