Wait for the Game of the Year edition?

It's worth noting that you don't need XBox Live Gold to get Dawnguard - if you have a basic internet connection and 'free' membership you'll be able to download it without paying subscriptions

I seem to recall they released a disk version of an expansion pack for the previous Elder Scrolls game, Oblivion. It's possible they'll do likewise for the Dawnguard expansion of Skyrim.

Not sure if there's other alternatives (perhaps by plugging your hard drive into a friend's console and downloading at his house?)

You don't need to pay for live to get live. If you connect to the Internet, you will have free silver connection which lets you buy stuff. You just cannot play online games or download demos - that is what paid gold membership allows.

Sorry if I am stating the obvious
