It's not often we cover news of Microsoft bagging an exclusive rather than losing one; and it's even less frequent we cover Comedy Central's foul-mouthed satire show, either. Not for lack of love, I might add! But today is a special day, as news has emerged that Microsoft has secured exclusive publishing rights to the second South Park title from 345 Games, who helmed 2009's Let's Go Tower Defense Play.
"Right now, South Park s actually in a first-party deal with Microsoft Studios, who published the first game, and they're doing a second game as well," reveals 345's creative director Prithvi Virasingh during a chat with Joystiq. However, Microsoft concede exclusive rights when the second as-yet-unannounced game is released, and 345 is freed to explore further options. "After that, that first-party exclusivity window expires, and we get a shot of taking that back."
Let's Go Tower Defense Play was a surprisingly solid game, with well thought-out mechanics and a wonderful riff on the show's tone and style. It's unclear if 345 will again opt for real-time tower defense, or attempt to squeeze South Park's foul-mouthed cast into another genre with more comedic possibilities. A full-blown World of Warcraft homage - inspired by the award-winning episode - could be fantastic! [Joystiq]
