Remember the Duke? It was the chunky, nigh-obese controller the original Xbox launched with back in 2001. For some reason, Microsoft opted to model the device on Lou Ferrigno's hands rather than the average male's, resulting in a controller that was often mistaken a toy spaceship. That said, we miss the old fellow and have fond memories of wrapping our undersized mitts around its bulky frame. 343 miss it, too, as they're mulling a limited quantities comeback!
343's head of franchise development and all-round fan favorite, Frank O'Connor, revealed the news over on NeoGAF. Giant Bomb picked up on the story and contacted 343's producer, Allison Stroll, who confirmed plans for a Duke revival. However, don't expect it to be a mass-produced effort. 343 is contacting select partners of the unofficial variety - modders, essentially - to look into packing 360 controller tech into a Duke case.
It would be produced in limited quantities, and probably distributed at specific events such as Halo Fest due this summer. I'm not overly fussed with this, to be honest; I love Halo, and I love the original Xbox. But my memories with the Duke aren't the most rose-tinted of recollections. That said, the pure nostalgia of wrapping my hands around a way-too-big controller and crash-landing on Halo for the first time - all over again - would be delectable! [Giant Bomb]
