Xbox One June update and Games With Gold now live

Jonathan Lester
Microsoft, Xbox One

Xbox One's June firmware update comes just in time for many gamers, considering that manual game installs have been filling up our hard drives to worrying levels. We're now able to plug two USB 3.0 external hard drives into our console, a simple and very handy process explained in the video above. Or... merely plug it in and follow the prompts if you can't stand the sound of Larry Hryb's grating voice. Just me?

Then again, my voice has been described as 'Clarkson on helium' so I can't really comment.

Other improvements include real-name functionality and a major SmartGlass update that lets you reorganise pins and browse OneGuide.

Games With Gold also finally arrives on Microsoft's console, offering Halo: Spartan Assault and Max & The Curse Of Brotherhood as this month's free games. You can save 50% on Crimson Dragon, which is like saying paying someone half as much to punch you in the face and steal your wallet. Much better to wait until Forza 5 and Ryse receive their promised 50-75% discounts later this month.

Just a thought, but is it possible to 'purchase' the Xbox One games online if you don't have the console, as you can do with the PS4 PS Plus games? I haven't seen every reference online to being able to do that either way, so thought it would be worth checking.

I assume that you can, so long as you have an Xbox Live Gold subscription. I can't check since I reviewed both games already (so they're on my account) - but here's the Spartan Assault marketplace link.

It says £7.99 when not signed in, but have a go and see what happens (don't accidentally buy it though! :p )
