Xbox LIVE Gold Gets An Upgrade, Becomes Playstation Plus

Microsoft announced that Xbox LIVE Gold is getting a little bit of an upgrade, and it's about time too. The subscription based membership service, which previously just let you play with your chums online and use services you're already paying for like Netflix, will now offer a little bit more.

Microsoft revealed during their press conference earlier today that being an Xbox LIVE Gold member will earn you two free games per month, which is pretty cool.

The first month will see loyal subscribers take home...

Assassin's Creed II and Halo 3.

Which we already have... and have had for a few years.

Still, baby steps, eh.

If they're going big in the first month (a sensible course of action) and could only come up with halo 3 and ac2 the signs aren't too promising tbh.

This just doesn't make any sense. If you're seriously going to try to rival PS Plus (which this move has to be geared towards), why on earth would you select two games that are five and three years old respectively, which most will either own, have owned or played already, and which are not by a long shot the most recent instalment in their respective series? How many people do they expect to move to Xbox Live Gold that wasn't on it already on the basis of this?

The comments of 'at least it's something' somewhat miss the point; as a business strategy this is woeful and will do little to redress the balance.
