As I've mentioned before, Microsoft loves to reward its faithful Xbox Live Gold customers with an exclusive deal every week. Unfortunately, Major Nelson also loves to kick us in the teeth every once in a while. Rather than discounting a game, map pack or DLC, Microsoft has slashed the prices on a couple of avatar accessories.
Specifically, the COG armour and COG helmet from Gears of War 2.
Let's review. Considering that only hardcore Epic fans would consider buying this gear... and that they've almost certainly already bought it... and you can support an Indie developer for less... this may well be the worst deal ever. However, it's still technically a saving; so just in case you've got a few Microsoft Points lying around:
- Click here to download a bunch of useless avatar clothing that, by all rights, ought to be free. Or just save your money for a decent Indie Game.
Considering Sony's recent blitzkrieg of game deals, it seems that Microsoft really ought to up it's game a little bit for next week. Please.
So, what's new?
Luckily, the latest XBLA releases have been excellent. Greed Corp and Lazy Raiders both received rave reviews thanks to their fresh perspectives on their respective genres- and Toy Soldiers has done it again. Garnering a metascore of 82%, Toy Soldiers exploits the relatively untouched World War 1 setting; blending traditional tower defence mechanics with the ability to control individual units (such as snipers and biplanes) in real time. The graphics aren't too shabby either.
Remember that this game is the part of the "Block party" deal. Buying Toy Soldiers along with the other March XBLA releases (including Game Room) will net you a rebate of 400MSP. Not much, but every little helps.
DLC and Demos?
The Desperate Escape DLC for Resident Evil 5 is the real highlight this week. It's only an hour long, but it does exactly what it says on the tin. Even Left 4 Dead has trouble keeping pace with the cooperative zombie-killing thrills that this chapter has to offer, and trust me: the finale is one of the finest sections of the entire game that you'll want to replay several times. Well worth the money for Res Evil fans.
The music games have naturally received their share of DLC. A new Blink 182 pack for Guitar Hero 5 will give veteran gamers a chance to remember their old school battle of the bands, but is completely overshadowed by the Lips release of Brick House by the Commodores. This is a classic track that's gagging for some karaoke action. Let it all hang out!
Finally, the Just Cause 2 and Moto GP 09/10 demos have been released. Just Cause 2 is already attracting a lot of attention for the unbridled, joyous mayhem it promises to deliver, and decent motorbike racers are too thin on the ground to ignore. Gentlemen, Start your downloading... and let us know what you think!
