Command Human & Alien Units
2K has announced that Firaxis' XCOM: Enemy Unknown will have a competitive multiplayer suite, allowing commanders to lead customised squads into two player turn-based deathmatches.
Before each match commences, players will be assigned a limited number of resource points to spend on units, weapons and upgrades - from both the human and alien forces. Once completed, turns will take nintety seconds each, balancing deep tactical play with short and pacy engagements.
Before you start panicking, Firaxis would like us to emphasize that the multiplayer is a totally optional feature that's entirely separate from the singleplayer campaign and series canon. It's there if you want it, or can be ignored at leisure without detracting from the experience.
"Throughout the history of the XCOM series, players have acted as the world’s last hope against the alien invasion,” said lead designer Jake Solomon. “With the multiplayer mode in XCOM: Enemy Unknown, gamers can finally find out what it’s like to command alien units and unleash extraterrestrial destruction on Planet Earth or defend it with a squad of XCOM soldiers and alien allies.”
