XCOM Trailered & Dated For March 2012

2K have dropped us a line to let us know that XCOM, the FPS reimagining of the classic tactical franchise from 2K Marin, will be launching in early 2012 on all formats. That's right, XCOM has now been officially confirmed for the PS3 as well as PC and Xbox 360. We have a new trailer, full release date and a few new details after the jump - but to be honest, we're not quite sure what to make of it yet.

2K President Christoph Hartmann has officially announced that XCOM will be launching on March 9th, 2012 in the UK - and I'll let him fill you in.

Every time I think of XCOM it gives me the chills, the kind that come from standing witness to the corruption and destruction of your world as you stand powerless to prevent it. I’m pleased to announce today that we will be bringing this experience to an even broader audience when XCOM comes to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in March 2012. - Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K

Here's the new E3 trailer for your delectation:

XCOM is described as being an origin story, and will be the first new entry in the franchise in over 11 years (after a slew of weak tie-ins managed to all but kill the brand). Playing as FBI Special Agent William Carter, players will lead a "veteran team against the threat of human extinction." After surgically striking against alien incusions, you'll be able to repurpose their advanced armaments and technology - and essentially "turn the invaders’ weapons against them." The storyline will focus on the terror of the unknown and helplessness against an implacable, mysterious menace... but with the aliens' tech under your belt, the fight is likely to get a lot fairer as the plot progresses.

2K Marin did an excellent job of making Bioshock 2 a tight, tense and worthwhile shooter (no, we don't subscribe to the lazy sequel argument here at Dealspwn), and we'll be interested to see whether their reimagining will help to revitalise the venerable franchise.

Oh dear. I could cry... :'(

I wish companies would stop dicking about with what used to be a fantastic strategy game (though not as good as Rebelstar Raiders, xcom's granddad.
FPS? It's a bloody travesty...
Give it back to Julian Gollop, or to someone who can take it back to it's roots.
