In today’s news roundup we see which game has topped the UK All Format Chart this Christmas. We hear about Microsoft’s plans to implement realistic Avatars, and lastly, we bring news of Serious Sam 3 which is apparently due for release sometime next year.
UK Chart Xmas Number 1
Although it’s a great day for music, with Rage Against the Machine’s Killing in the Name Of topping the charts this Christmas and breaking the tyrannical reign of Simon Cowell and his X- Factor friends, it’s a slightly less sensational result in the world of video games. In fact, the video game chart topper was so obvious and the odds so ludicrously high, you probably would have needed to put down a few grand at the bookies to actually make any money. However, just in case you’re genuinely waiting in suspense, I’ll put you out of your misery (although the above picture might give you a small clue)…
The number one slot this Christmas for the UK-All Formats Chart goes to (drum roll) Activision’s Modern Warfare 2 - surprise, surprise. In second place it was EA’s FIFA 10 which was followed by the Wii Fit plus in third, whilst forth place went to Wii Sport’s Resort. Despite being slightly higher initially, Assassin's Creed II has now slipped down to fifth position. However for a full run down of the chart, follow this link. [Eurogamer]
MS Want Avatars to reflect your shape
In other news, it seems that Microsoft are trying to push through a patent application for avatars ‘Individualised by Physical Characteristics". This basically means that all future Microsoft avatars will provide a more realistic portrayal of the person they represent, meaning that video games will no longer offer you a place to hide from all your physical inadequacies and body hang ups. Microsoft reckons this all for our own good and should encourage people to get off their backsides and actually do some exercise.
Here’s what they had to say, 'Physiological data that reflect a degree of health of the real person can be linked to rewards of capabilities of a gaming Avatar, an amount of time budgeted to play, or a visible indication. Thereby, people are encouraged to exercise. Physiological data that reflect the health and perhaps also mood also improve social interaction in virtual environments.’ In other words, prepare for your computer to start calling you fat. Serious Sam 3 should be done in 2010
Fans of Serious Sam will be pleased to learn that the third installment will be out some time next year according to Croteam. ‘Serious Sam 3 is happening for sure’ said CEO Roman Ribaric, but few details have yet been released. Ribaric did let a few thing slip some month back, stating that the sequel was going to drop the cartoony visuals but still retain its characteristically chaotic game play. The Xbox live version is coming out in January 2010. [TotalFormat]
