"Playstation Phone" Release Set For End Of March

Xperia Play UK Launch Dated And Detailed

Sony Ericsson has confirmed the UK launch date for their Xperia Play handset, which was arguably the worst-kept gaming and telecommunication secret of all time. Its actual thumbsticks could make virtual thumsticks a thing of the past, and we've got the full details along with launch games and networks.

The Xperia Play is set to hit the shelves on March 31st, and will be compatible with (and sold by) all major networks. Not only that, but Sony Ericsson believe that gaming retailers may also decide to stock the handset along with their more traditional wares.

We are currently still in commercial conversation, but I’d be surprised if we didn’t see Xperia Play appear in other channels. All the mobile operators and retailers are selling it. It is rare these days to get a product that is sold everywhere, but this is one of those. This will be the biggest marketing campaign we have had in the UK. - David Hilton, Sony Ericsson Marketing Director

So, speaking of games, what are the launch titles looking like? The Xperia Play will come loaded with the following six games:

  • Crash Bandicoot
  • FIFA 10
  • Bruce Lee Dragon Warriors
  • Star Battalion
  • Tetris
  • The Sims 3

Sony has also confirmed that over 50 titles will be available for purchase on Playstation Suite.

We've already got hands-on with the Xperia Play. Brendan has checked out its gaming potential, whilst Matt and Mobot's Lewis Curdie have assessed its worth as a phone. Want more info? Hit the links!

Right, it's that time again. Are you considering buying in to the Xperia Play? If so, why? Have your say in the comments!
